What is the role of psychotherapy vs medication?
Help change the pattern of behaviour of thought in contrast to physical aspects/acute situations which are improved with medication
Define clinical psychology.
The study and application of theories and models of psychology to understanding, preventing, and relieving psychologically-based distress or dysfunction and to promote well-being (both subjective and objective) and personal development.

Clinical psychologists - 3yr degree followed by 3yr doctoral training course
Psychotherapists - variety of specialist courses, usually of several years in duration
Counsellor - 1 or 2yr full-time courses
What is the role of clinical psychologists?
Interventions for various mental health issues
Provide psychological viewpoint in MDTs
Teaching and training
Consultation to other clinicians
May work in other areas e.g. cognitive assessment, developmental disorders, dementia asssessment
What is psychodynamic psychotherapy?
Model of psychology therapy, the primary focus of which is to reveal the unconscious content of a client’s psyche in an effort to alleviate psychic tension.
Centred around the concept that some maladaptive functioning is at play and that maladaptation is at least in part unconscious (usually develps early in life and causes dissonance day to day)
What is cognitive behavioural therapy?
Psychotherapeutic approach, a talking therapy, that aims to solve problems concenrning dysfunctional emotions, behaviours and cognitions through a goal-oriented, systematic procedure.
Based on the therory that how we think (cognition), how we feel (emotion), and how we act (behaviour) are related and interact together in complex ways.
Aim is to discover and identify the biased, dysfunctional ways of relating or reacting and to target these to increase well-being.
What is Rogerian therapy aka? What is the basis of this therapy?
aka humanistic psychology (developed in 1950s)
Rogers believed that a client needed only thee things from a clinician to experience therapeutic improvement - (1) congruence, (2) unconditional positive regard, (3) and empathetic understanding.
What is the goal of family therapy?
Family therapy, also referred to as couple and family therapy and family systems therapy, is a branch of psychotherapy that works with families and couples in intimate relationships to nurture change and development
