Lecture 9 Flashcards
define alkalinity:
is the capacity to accept H+ ions
what governs pH of water once CO2 is dissolved?
HCO3-
any metal that is 2 or 3+ can form what?
acid-mine water
the presence of metal ions in water produces acidic or basic water?
acidic
what would the pH in a limestone aquifier be like compared to a pure lake water at pH 5.6?
It would be higher.
if the lake has low pH it has a lot of what?
CO2
why can you have more human waiste for fertilizer in western soil compared to ontarios soil?
Ontario has more acidic soil, if you have acidic soil and metal iolns the metal ions retain the + charge so mobility is increased. if you have an alkaline environment (like western soil) then that metal will have a netural charge and less mobility.
