Lecture 9 Flashcards
What is periodontitis?
Bacterial infection resulting in inflammation in the supporting structures of the teeth resulting in destruction of the alveolar bone around the teeth and periodontal ligament
What are the three component of a case definition system of periodontitis?
Identification of patient as a perio case
Identification of type of perio case
Description of clinical presentation: elements affecting clinical management and prognosis and elements with broader influences on both oral and systemic health
Staging of periodontitis
Stage 1: Initial
Stage 2: Moderate
Stage 3: Severe
Stage 4: Severe
Extent: generalized, localized, molar-incisor pattern
Grading criteria of perio
Grade A: slow rate
Grade B: moderate rate
Grade C: Rapid rate
How to define a perio case
- Interdental CAL >3 on two non-adjacent teeth
- Lingual or Buccal CAL >3 with probing depths >3 on >2 teeth but CAL can not be due to recession, cervical caries, distal of second molar when third molar is removed or impacted, endodontic lesion draining into marginal periodontal, vertical root fracture
What factors makes each periodontal case different?
Age
Number of lesions
Distribution
Severity
Location in the dental arch
Level of Plaque contamination
When is staging determined?
At presentation
What are the elements of staging?
Severity
Complexity of management
Extent and distribution
What are the three elements of severity?
Interdental CAL
RBL
Tooth loss
