Lecture 9/16 - E2 Flashcards
Incomplete (partial) Dominance
Where heterozygote individuals show intermediate phenotypes between either homozygous state
Use designations like A1 or A2 instead of Aa
F1 theory shows similar results to blending theory
Codominance
Heterozygotes are composite or additive (not intermediate) phenotypes with characteristic traits of both homozygotes
Example - ABO blood types
How do you type blood
Antigens that are present cause clumping Examples: A = A antigen clumping AB = A and B clumping OO = no clumping
What is an antigen?
Glycolipids with the lipid portion covalently fused to a protein in the red blood cell membrane
Where is the H-antigen found?
On all ABO blood types (no extra sugar)
How is the H-antigen modified for the A type?
Turns into N-acetlygalactosamine with an extra sugar
How is the H-antigen modified for the B type?
Turns into Galactose
