Lecture 8: Social Action - Weber Flashcards
What is the name of Weber’s book?
The Protestant Ethic and the Spirit of Capitalism.
According to Weber, does religion inhibit or instigate change?
Instigate.
How did Calvinism have an elective affinity with Capitalism?
Calvinist values were to work hard, reinvest money rather than spend it and to be disciplined - all of which benefit capitalism
What is meant by the ascetic ideal?
Whereby Calvinists lived simple, frugal lives in the hope that they will be allowed into heaven upon death.
What causes salvation anxiety?
When Calvinists are unsure as to whether they have been allocated a place in heaven or hell, as it is predetermined by God.
Some sociologists argue capitalism only developed in Calvinist society, how is this a criticism of Weber’ theory?
Other societies who had the foundations for capitalism did not develop it, suggesting that it was a unique example. Therefore, the theory is not applicable to other societies.
