Describe the training and registration requirements for psychologists
The Psychology Registration Board (PsyBA) of the Australian Health Practitioner Regulation Agency (AHPRA) are the organisation who says I can or cannot be a psychologist.
Identify the different education pathways available to postgraduate psychology students
4+2 Pathway - supervised practice for two years following fourth year and becoming a registered psychologist.
5+1 Pathway - quite new and referred to as Graduate Diploma of Professional Psychology. One year course work and one year of placement
Masters - two years fulltime, coursework, thesis, placement, standard pathway for practicing psychologist. Range of specialities available.
Doctorate - three to four years fulltime, coursework, thesis, and placement.
Core skills of psychologist is ?
Knowledge and skills in assessment and diagnosis
Able to design and implement psychological interventions
knowledge and competence in research and evaluation
Ethics and professional practice (including Values and ethical principles, ethical decision making, professional conduct and professional competence)
Be able to outline the role of the Australian Health Practitioners Regulation Agency and the Psychology Board if Australia
The function of AHPRA registration is to
Protect the community by:
Promoting the standards of professional practice;
Setting standards for registration;
Investigating complaints against psychologists;
Managing the health of psychologists with a physical or mental impairment.
