Lecture 8 - Nucleic Acids Flashcards
what can nuclobases be?
pyrimidines or purines
what is pyrimidine?
ring structure found in C,U,T a change in the side change makes each base different
what is purine?
a ring structure found in A, G it is a pyrimidine fused to imidazole ring
what is GTP?
Guanosine triode phosphate which is important in protein synthesis and cell signalling
what is NTP?
nucleoside triode phosphate
what does ATP + GTP regulate ?
amount of NTP produced
what is CAMP?
produced by adenylate cyclase its an important signalling molecule which contains ribose in nucleotide
what do complementary strands of DNA have?
asymmetric ends
Describe RNA
converts DNA to form a template molecule for polynucleotide RNA
what is the function of mRNA?
converts DNA to form a template molecule
Describe tRNA
transports amino acids that build up protein molecules, there are 20, one for each amino acid with a specific anticodon and amino acid
Describe rRNA
makes up ribosomes, organelle that translates mRNA
what is a central dogma?
information in nucleic acids which can be perpetuated or transferred where the transfer is irreversible
