Describe the relationship between lipid and membrane shape

Shape determined by ratio of head group to tail
Large head group, small tail - conical shape - can only fit together if membrane bilayer curls very tightly
Cylinder shape - head and tail groups occupy very similar cross-sectional area - form a sheet
So shape of lipid very important in determining membrane curvature
