Lecture 8 - Epigenetics Flashcards
What is the epigenome?
The group of modifications that can occur in our genomes that will not change the sequence of the bases in the DNA but can change the DNA conformation and as a consequence change the expression of genes
What is an example of a disorder that would be generated based on improper expression of the epigenome?
PW and Angelmans Syndrome
What explains why a fetus can’t develop if both copies of a chromosome were inherited from a single parent?
Epigenetics - imprinting
What did the baby blues study show?
Newborns whose mothers had depression had a highly methylated glucocorticoid receptor gene = higher than normal stress hormones
Why does epigenetics need to have a transgenerational effect?
Because then it shows that they can be passed on. For women, the effects need to show until the 4th generation. For men, only 3rd.
