Lecture 8 - Cross Sectional Study Flashcards
What type of study is a cross sectional study?
Analytic observational study
What is a cross-sectional study?
Where exposure and outcome are assessed at the same point in time
You just collect data at a certain tike point
What is a problem with cross-sectional study?
Provides no information with regards to the influence of time on the variables measured
What are the strengths of a cross-sectional study?
Cheap (unless a massive nationwide survey)
Good for studying prevalence of a condition
Can study associations of multiple exposures and outcomes
Generating study hypotheses (cant tell you the association)
What are the weaknesses of a cross sectional study?
-Causality cannot be assessed
-Findings may be time sensitive
-selection all bias
-generalisability
What is selection bias?
the bias introduced by the selection of individuals, groups, or data for analysis in such a way that proper randomization is not achieved, thereby failing to ensure that the sample obtained is representative of the population intended to be analyzed
So findings = INCORRECT
What is generalisability?
When findings are correct, but applying these findings to other situations or populations may be problematic (external validity)
How does stratified sampling help mitigate selection bias?
Helps ensure that the sample population more accurately reflects the entire population
Do biases and confounders in a study depend on the type of study design?
No not the TYPE of study design the Actual study design and nature of data
