Lecture 8 Flashcards
A phase can be
Continuous or discontinuous / a pure substance or a solution
What is a phase?
It is a homogeneous, physically distinct and mechanically separable portion of the material with a given chemical composition and structure.
Can gases be multiple phases?
No, gases can only be one phase.
What gives a cooling curve?
Constant composition at varying temperatures.
What gives an isothermal scan?
Constant temperature at varying compositions.
Phase diagrams give:
- The phases present
- The composition of each phase present
- The amount of each phase present
What are the four phases in the iron-carbon phase diagram?
- Delta-ferrite
- Austenite
- Ferrite
- Cementite (Fe3C)
What is the structure of ferrite?
BCC (Brittle)
What is the structure of austenite?
FCC (Ductile)
What is the Curie point?
The transition from non-magnetic to magnetic around 770C in the iron-carbon phase diagram.
What are the properties of cementite?
Hard and brittle.
Hypoeuctoid steels are XXX while hypereutectoid steels are XXX.
Softer (ductile), Harder (brittle)
What enhances the oxidation and corrosion resistance in cast irons?
High silicon content.
