Lecture 8 Flashcards
Motor cortex
Contains 3 areas:
Primary -planning
Pre-motor - selection of movements
Supplementary - bimanual coordination
Frontal cortex
Executive functions such as planning, inhibition and working memory
Somatosensory Cortex
Responsible for processing pressure, pain, temperature
Visual Cortex
Processes form, motion, orientation, colour, object identification.
Lowest area contains accurate spatial “map” of visual world
Auditory cortex
Processes sound frequency, location, music, prosody, oral language
Limbic system function
“Older mammalian brain”
Involved in key aspects of memory, reward, and emotional processing.
Basal nuclei function
Involved in:
- motor suppression
- motor learning
- motor response selection
Cerebellum function
Co-ordinates complex movements
Stores procedural memories (motor learning)
Brainstem/hindbrain function
Regulates:
- breathing
- basic autonomic functioning
- sleep/wakefulness
Electroencephalogram
Records electrical fields generated by groups of neurons firing action potentials
Functional Magnetic Resonance Imaging (fMRI)
Images protons in hydrogen that are apart if water molecules in the bloodstream.
Resolution: 1mm3
Transcranial magnetic stimulation (TMS)
Electric current disrupts brain activity creating “virtual lesion”
