Lecture 8 Flashcards
what is the issue with standard plates and the one size-fits-all?
plates have to be bent in the OR to fit the anatomy of the person, which takes OR time and makes the surgery longer (more expensive and imcreases risk for patient)
what can FEA be used for?
analyse the stresses and strains in an implant before producing it.
You can also add info about the bone density, which makes the model more accurate
what is one big issue with mandibular angle fractures?
high rate of non-union -> bones will shift during biting
what structural optimisation concept was used in the case of the mandibular plates?
topology optimisation
what steps are included in making the virtual 3D model? And in the manufacturing step?
virtual model:
- muslce forces and load cases
- contact boundary conditions
- material properties data
- design domain and screw placement
manufacturing:
- 3d printing
- post processing
- quality control
- cleaning and sterilisation
in the example of the mandibular plate, how many screws were used in the topology optimisation?
4 or 8
what are the three aspects that are optimised?
stress
deformation
mass
