Lecture 8 Flashcards
parts of Modal model of Memory
- sensory memory
- short term memory
- long term memory
What is sensory memory?
visual, auditory
- all this sensory input is being directed at us, we try to remeber it
What is short term memory?
what you are paying attention to right now is short term memory
- like apple verficatin code
what imporves long term memory
- The act of retrivng info will help transport something from short term to long term
What does encode mean?
To transport something from short to long tem memory
What was george sperling concerned with?
- how long does visual stimulation persist before it goes away?
- is the info there but we are having trouble accessing it?
What was geroge sperling’s expirment?
- when he told people to repeat 3 rows of lettres, they only remeber 4/12
- in another version, he made people memorize a row depending on the tone they heard
- he played a high tone, meduim and low tone. depending on the note you heard you would remeber that row.
What did George sperling find in his expirement?
-The information is there if you can get it out quickly enough
Immediate partial report
- scieintists tells you which part to report
How long does sensory memory last?
1 second
What is iconic memory?
Visual sensry memory
What did geroge sperling find in regards to the tone?
- the longer he delayed the tone, the less they remember
- people can remember lettres when tone is played after they dissapear.
How long does visual sensory memory last?
250 milliseconds (1/4 of a second)
What is Short term memory do?
- system that stores small amounts of information for breif period of time
- contents in your mind right now
Short term memory study - John brown
- students see 3 lettres
- soon as the lettres disappear they count back by 3’s from 309
- 309 prevents you from rehearsing
