lecture 8 Flashcards
downloading background images for gps assistance
- capture and download images
- configure image for pathfinder office
-upload image to terrasync - manage images in terrasync
background images are used to
locate ground control object
aerial images are used to
identify nearby environments when doing gps field work
help estimate error and accuracy
where to find background images
- vector datasets available from govt sites
- state sites have regional high res aerial photo images
- USGS data
- online map server
how to configure a background image for pathfinder
- upload the image from a site or a source to arcmap
- zoom into the area you want to analyze, such as UNC campus
- set the data frame projection… should set it to WGS84 in class
- export your map as an image . tiff and a resolution, and ‘write world file’
- load the background image into pathfinder and confirm projection
- Utility -> Transfer : will upload the image to your Trimble GPS receiver
- in terrasync, you can turn on the background option to load the image
what is a data dictionary
the entry of attribute information into a GIS using a ‘dictionary’ of assigned values/categories saved to your receiver’s memory
data dictionary hierarchy
Feature - point, line, polygon
– Attribute - bench, trail, shelter, parking lot
– Value - brown bench, red bench, ugly bench, bonita bench
designing a data dictionary
- define your targets based on your fieldwork survey goals
- for each type of target, define the characteristics you want to survey
- for each characteristic, define how you would describe it
- set a unique symbol for each attribute
default dictionary settings
logging interval, minimum positions, accuracy
setting an attribute type
- select the value as type: numeric, text, time, etc
