Lecture 7 - Vision Flashcards
How is visual perception a constructive process?
- there is a sequence to how our brain processes what we see.
- It first distinguishes patterns before forming an image.
What are the 4 Visual Performances?
- Snellen Chart
- Absolute Threshold
- Spatial Resolution → Contrast Sensitivity
- Facial Recognition
Snellen Chart
tests for detail and clarity (chart with letters)
Absolute Threshold
dark Room looking at a dark screen, lights are flashed, your threshold is up to the level where you see the tiniest amount of light
Spatial Resolution
Bars of light and dark bars. Objective is to distinguish the bars/spaces in between
Facial recognition
To be able to see the subtle differences in faces
Bottom-Up processing
- looking for patterns and detail to figure out an image
- processing things simultaneously
Bottom-Up processing (low level and intermediate level)
Distinguishing…
- lines
- contrast
- disparity (depth where things are)
- movement
- colour
-etc.
intermediate level would be to question what it can resemble, what it is similar to, basically to make something out of those shapes/patterns
Top-down processing
- seeing images we don’t expect, but with the help of priming, we are able to tell what the image is after being told
