Lecture 7 Trade offs Flashcards
When do interactions between different ecosystem services occur?
Interactions between different ecosystem services occur when multiple services respond to the same driver of change.
What is trade off?
Trade off is when the use of one ecosystem service directly decreases the benefits supplied by another
What is synergy?
Synergy is when the use of one ecosystem service increases the benefit of another
What are ecosystem services bundles
ES bundles are sets of ES that appear togther across space and time
Why doing a tradeoff analysis?
To ensure that in decision making all the relations/associations that cause trade offs and synergies are well known, to prevent unwanted consequences
What are the 2 different types of trade offs?
1) Negative correlation between ES
2) conflicting land use or management options
What are the important factors to consider when doing any kind of trade-off analysis?
- Differences in the Temporal dimension/ dynamics of ecological functions;
- Differences in units of different ES;
- Differences in the spatial extent of the ecological functions;
- Visual representation of those interactions.
What are the types of trade-off visualisation/quantification tools? And what are the disadvantages of each?
-Pear wide tool (only for comparing 2 ES);
-Multivariate analyses:
Principle component analysis (PCA) ( only for when all components are quantitative)
or Multiple Correspondences analyses
( for when components are factors)
But there can be a mic between those two;
What are the integrative tools for trade off analysis?
extended CBA and Multicriteria analysis ( those are complementary, the result of one can be used to run the other)
