lecture 7 pt 2 Flashcards
6 earthquakes subduction zones can host
- megathrust
- forearc
- intermediate depth
- deep
- outer rise normal
- volcanic seismicity
megathrust earthquakes
tohoku japan
- ruptured all the way to the seafloor
- generated a tsunami
forearc earthquakes
tend to be moderate, but are shallow and close to Earth which makes them hazardous
- Victoria and Seattle
intermediate depth earthquakes
mexico and anchorage
- occur in all subduction zones
deep earthquakes
often too deep to cause damage
outer rise normal faults
often too far off shore to cause damage
volcanic seismicity
rising magma beneath arc volcanoes
- low magnitude that forewarn eruptions
3 types that occur at continental plate boundaries
collision zones, rifts and strike slip
charaacteristics of continental plate boundaries
spread over wide mountainous regions
- kill more people even though they are smaller due to the location of cities
ex. Bam, Iran was settled due to the fault taht destroyed it
intraplate earthquakes
happen within plates not at boundaries, stress from push and pull
- postglacial rebound
- manmade stress of fracking (Alberta and Oklahoma)
