Lecture 7 Part 1 Flashcards
What is a population?
The total number of participants
What is a sample?
A reduced (%) number of participant that belong to the population
How to define the target population?
Critical to the success of the research project to clearly define the target population and the sample
- Set the goals very clearly
- Keep in mind possible limitations
->to what degree do these limitations affect the quality of the research
What is the probalistic sampling method you know and define probalistic method?
Each member of the population has a known probability of being selected
- control that you have alt the population
- you have to choose randomly
-> Random Sampling
Each member has an equal and known chance
What is the non-probalistic sampling methods you know and define non-probalistic methods?
Members are selected from the population in some non-random manner (choose directly)
-> Convenience Sampling
Used in explatorary research where the researcher is interested in getting an inexpensive approximation
Members are selected because they’re available and cheap
->Judgement Sampling
Based upon judgement
chosen sample has a purpose, linked to the objectives
-> Snowball sampling
used when desirable characteristic is rare
relies on referrals from inital subjects to generate additional subjects
when it is extremely difficult or costly to locate respondents
introduces bias, because it is not a good cross section from the population
Justify using the method
- Resources (costs)
- Inability to identify the whole population
- Exploratory study (gathering initial results)
