Lecture 7 - Indoor Air Quality Flashcards
What are the recommended temperature and humidity ranges for a healthy home?
Temperature: 18-24
Humidity: 40-60%
Humidity: Where does moisture come from?
- Ground
- Outdoor air
- Leaky claddings
- Plumbings
- Human activity
Issues: What are the detrimental effects of moisture?
- Poor indoor air quality
- Fungi, dust mites
- Asthma, headaches, flu
- Structural integrity issues
What are at least 3 indications of moisture in a building?
- Dampness
- Mould
- Condensation
- Smell
What is Building Related Sickness (BRI)?
Illnesses caused directly as the result of being in and around the building environment. Symptoms can be related to airborne building pollutants
What is Sick-Building Syndrome (SBS)?
Discomfort, adverse reactions, or non-specific sicknesses that appear to be linked to the time people spend in a particular building
What is Multiple Chemical Sensitivity Syndrome (MCS)?
Condition of sensitivity to a number of chemicals at very low concentrations
What are 3 strategies for good IAQ?
- Control of moisture and condensation in the building
- Limit entry of outdoor contaminants
- Limit production of indoor contaminants
List 3 methods to control moisture in the building assembly
- Avoid leaking rainwater
- Direct rainwater away from the building
- Limit condensation of water vapour in the building envelope
