Lecture 7 Flashcards
How is growth measured in bacteria?
Growth is measured through the number of cells that bacteria create and not the size to grow at.
what features do a bacterial generation length of time depend upon?
- level of acidity(pH)
- Temperature
- level of osmotic pressure
- Water
- Amount of nutrients
What type of growth do bacteria undergoe?
Bacteria undergoe exponential/logarithmic growth.
What are the 4 phases of bacterial growth
1) lag phase: Beginning bacteria begin to adust to stress conditions, turn on and off genes, and convert from a vegatative cell to a spore.
2) Optimal phase: This is the exponential part where bacteria have enough nutrients and are thriving
3) Stationary Phase:
This when the nutrients bacteria need are becoming exhausted and the waste released from bacteria are building up.
4) Death decline phase: This is when nutrients have been completly exhausted and the most waste has been built up.
