Lecture 7 Flashcards
What are the 4 terms on the reality virtuality continuum?
Real environment, augmented reality, augmented virtuality, virtual environment.
What is Azuma’s definition of augmented reality? What is needed for these?
Combines real and virtual objects in a real environment(needs displays and visual coherence), runs interactively and in real time(needs interaction devices and computational power), registers (aligns) real and virtual objects with each other(needs robust tracking).
What is spatial augmented reality?
Augmented reality using large spatially-aligned optical elements(e.g projectors acting on a room), the display is seperated from the users of the system.
What is Video See-through augmented reality?
The real world is captured with a video camera, digital information is then overlaid and displayed on the integrated screen. The display is not seperated from the user, being either hand held or head mounted.
What is optical see-through augmented reality?
Real and virtual is combined using an optical combiner or contact lens(not yet), always worn on the head.
What are some of the challenges of augmented reality?
There are technological limitations such as needing better accuracy(sensors, tracking algorithms), displays, weight, and power consumption, but also social acceptance, privacy concerns, availability of content and applications.
