Lecture 7 Flashcards
What are the evolutionary features of onychophora?
150+ Species
with fossils 540 million years old
probably very closely related to the arthopoda
What are the ecological features of the onychophora phyla?
They are terrestrial but require high air humidity
Are free living and predatory
What are the form and function features of the onychophora?
Lobopod, antennae, jaws and oral papilla
What are the evolutionary features for arthopoda?
It is the most successful of all animal phyla with 1000000 described species
What are the subphyla of arthopoda studied in class?
Chelicerata, crustacean, myriapoda and hexapoda
What is the body plan of the chelicerata subphyla?
The spider body plan with 2 body segments (cephalothorax and abdomen) joined by pedicel
Carapace covers upper surface
4 pairs of leg
Predators
What are the features of the crustacea subphyla?
30,000 described species
Mostly marine and freshwater
Among the most successful animals and are abundant in the ocean including the copepods which are dominant in zooplankton
What is the body plan of the crustacea subphyla?
Contains a cephalothorax with two paris of antennae, abdomen usually biramous appendages (branch into two)
What are the features of the myriapoda subphyla?
This includes millipedes and centipedes
1300 species
All terrestrial with uniramous appendages (a single series of segments attached end to end
What are the features of the subphyla hexapoda?
This contains the class insecta which has over 1000000 described species with 2-50 million estimated undescribed They are also mostly terrestrial and of major importance to ecosystems and humans
What are the form and function features of insecta?
They are coelomate with a reduced coelom, the main body cavity is a haemocoel
Contain an open circulatory system with haemolymph is pumped by a heart through a dorsal artery into the blood sinuses where organs are bathed
Have a hardened cuticle which provides support, protection and internal muscle attachment
Segmented like annelids
Fusion of segments allowing different body regions to specialize for different functions
Use joined appendages, complex digestive system and have a ventral nerv cord with segmental ganglia
What are the features of the abdomen in the insecta class of the hexapoda subphyla?
Contains the organ systems including the sexual organs, hind part of gut, heart, excretory system
What are the features of the thorax in the insecta class of the hexapoda subphyla?
Specialized for locomotion legs, wings large flight muscles
What are the features of the head in the insecta class of the hexapoda subphyla?
Specialized for feeding with complex mouthparts as well as for information gathering and processing with a large brain and a secondary brain (suboesphageal ganglion), complex compound eyes, small antennae and palps
