lecture 7 Flashcards
NMES
What is the pulse width of (dark blue) NMES?
300usec (micro second)
What is the common ramp for NMES?
1-3 seconds
What is the best frequency for tetany (continuous muscle contraction)?
35–50 Hz
What is a common ‘on’ and ‘off’ time?
On 10secs off 20secs
What is the purpose of reciprocal in NMES?
facilitate coordinated muscle contractions in opposing muscle groups
Why is it important to start on CO?
To test electrical stim so its safe and comfortable for the patient
What are three things that are unique about the order of recruitment with NMES?
- Recruits type 2 muscles first
- Recruit synchronously
- Large motor units
Which muscle fibers are stimulated with NMES?
Type 2
Will NMES work for a completely denervated muscle?
no
What are three common muscles used for NMES?
- Quadriceps
- Gluteus maximus
- Calf muscles (gastrocnemius and soleus)
