Lecture 7 Flashcards

Q
- Why is Whittingham (2003) correct to say that it is not in the best interests of any organisation to blame an individual and allow “The Blame Machine” to swing into action and divert everyone’s attention from the underlying cause of the accident or incident
A
It takes attention away from the system error – which is the error that can have been reduced. Organisation might want to blame an individual as this diverts the attention away from the faults of the system that may be an inconvenient and expensive to solve. Then further disaster or accidents will occur because the underlying nature of the cause has not been corrected. This approach only has a short term cost benefit.
