What are the possible mechanisms of analgesia of hypnosis?
- Peripheral: Stimulates descending inhibitory pain fibers
- Central: Modulates pain-related activity in the ANTERIOR CINGULATE GYRUS (anterior cingulate cortex) and in S1
- therapeutic alliance established between doctor and his patient
What is involved in anatomy of pain perception?
- ACC

What is role of ACC in pain? Significance?
Active in alterations of UNPLEASANTNESS of pain
What is role of S1 in pain?
Active in perception of pain itself
What is the difference between hypnosis with or without suggestions?
With no suggestions, no change in ACC activity
With suggestion to decrease unpleasantness, decrease activity (blood flow) in ACC/S1
With suggestion to increase unpleasantness, increase activity (blood flow) in ACC/S1
What were patients with sickle cell disease able to do with hypnosis?
- Controls pain
- Reduce narcotic use
- Pain free sleep
- Reduce anxiety
- Enhance motivation to cope with illness
What is the role of hypnosis?
The ADJUNCT to therapy, not THE therapy

Yes, can be used as analgesia

Why might the left brain be more active?
The left brain centers are specifically related to “verbal mediation of hypnotic suggestions, working memory functions, and top-down processes that may reinterpret the sensory experience
