Lecture 6 Monitoring Equipment Flashcards

1
Q

IDC (Indwelling catheter)

A
  • Measures the amount of urine produced

- soft tube that’s placed up the urethra and collects urine from the bladder

Q

Nasogastric tube

A
  • flexible tube that goes via nose/mouth and into stomach
  • removes bodily fluids from stomach to prevent vomiting/aspiration
  • to delive meds/food when the pt is ventilated/can’t swallow

Q

Central line/Central venous catheter

A
  • used to deliver fluids/medications (some meds cant be put into peripheral arteries bc they are too toxic so must be put into larger vessels to dilute)
  • inserted into large vein (jugular or subclavian)

Q

Arterial line

A
  • usually radial (can also be femoral/dorsalis pedis)
  • radial line usually splinted to avoid excess movement
  • arterial line used for ABG samples

Q

Pulmonary Artery Catheter

A
  • balloon tipped flow directed catheter (balloon inflated and put in artery; blood flow pulls balloon and therefore catheter to where it needs to go; then deflated)
  • measures pressure at various locations along the way
  • used for:
    > Heart Failure
    > Meds delivery
    > optimise fluid rx
    > peri/postoperative surgical procedure with DV/pulmonary dysfunction
    FOR A VERY SICK PATIENT

Q

Modifications needed due to PA

A
  • if just had PA catheter removed - delay intervention
  • pt generally confined to bed
  • monitor changes during treatment

Q

PiCCO Monitoring

A

Pulse Contour Cardiac Monitorying

  • continuous
  • gives a lot of info about cardiac function
  • for a very sick patient
    > used in shock, sepsis, major surgery, cardiac dysfunction, ARDS
  • 2 catheters needs - central venous and femoral catheter

Q

What are the different types of airway pressures?

A
  1. Peak inspiratory pressure (< 40cmH2O) (max pressure in a set Vt)
  2. Mean airway pressure (avg pressure over the entire ventilatory period)
  3. End Expiratory pressure (pressure @ end of expiratory phase)
