Lecture 6 - Crystal Structure 2 Flashcards
What is a unit cell
Small repetitive volume which contains the complete lattice pattern of a crystal
Difference between simple vs centred cubes
Simple only have atoms at the corner of cubes or rhomboids
Centered have additional atoms -
Body centred extra atom in the middle of the cube
Face centred extra atom in the middle of each face of the cube
Which material has the highest density
Diamond
Plastic
Gold
Wood
Gold
Why does metals have the highest density
Metals have close packing (metallic bonding)
Often large atomic masses
P of metals > p ceramics > p polymers
Why are ceramics less dense than metals
Ceramics have loess dense packing
Often lighter elements
Why is polymers the least dense from ceramics and metals
Polymers have low packing density (often amorphous)
Lighter elements (C,H,O)
