Lecture 5 The Big Picture Pt 2 Flashcards
What are the main reasons for endangered species?
• Habitat loss • Overexploitation • Pollution • Disease Invasive Species
Why might only in-situ conservation not work?
• Destruction of habitats and fragmentation
• Pest species distribution
• Hunting
• Secondary effects: pollution, global warming, super-nitrification
• Conservation of habitats is resource expensive but conservation as a cause is poor.
• War
• Legal Entities can be changed (national parks revoked)
• Size may be too small for a viable population
All animals requirements may not be within the conserved areas. (outside areas also affect inside areas)
What can the captive wild animal industry add to conservation efforts?
- Ex-situ captive breeding!!
- Up close education of human audience
- Controlled research
- Governmental influence (because industry size)
- Extra revenue and logistical resource (zoo money handed to various in-situ projects, education and aid for outside programs)
- An ark for species that are or might go extinct in the wild
- Expertise created for captive breeding, animal husbandry, and population management. (the experts tend to be here)
What must captive breeding (ex-situ) be partnered with?
• In-situ conservation (integrated conservation)
Is captive breeding viable? (concerns people have)
- Too few species can be saved
- Survival in the wild
- Lack of knowledge on species
- Species concepts vs nature
- Ideal individual issues
- Inbreeding and genetic variation issues (small pops)
- Coordination issues across captive establishments
