what are the most common diagnoses for uni students?
chlamydia, herpes, HPV
what are the categories of STIs and their treatments
bacterial (cured with antibiotics) and viral (cannot be cured)
what is the most prevalent bacterial STI in canada
chlamydia
how to diagnose chlamydia in men and women
men: urine sample
women: urine sample or vaginal swab
symptoms of chlamydia in men and women
men: 50% asymptomatic
women: 75% discharge, pain with urination
long term consequences of chlamydia in women
spread to the uterus and cn cause pelvic inflamation. can increase the risk of ectopic preganncy
long term consequences of chlamydia in men
can cause epididymitus (inflamation of epididymis) and can cause infertility in men
gonorrhea in people with penis
white or yellowish puss like discharge from the urethra, possibly burning
gonorrhea in people with vagina
no symptoms since the infection is in the cervix. may be slight discharge
where else can gonorrhea happen on the body
rectum, mouth, eyes
how is gonorrhea treated?
antibiotics
what happens if gonorrhea is not treated
it can affect the reproduction tract and in some cases can go into the blood and affect joint tissues
syphillis if left untreated
very serious. can affect nervous system and even lead to death
symptoms of syphilis
ulcer like region where bacteria entered the body
what is the secondary stage of syphilis
generalized body rash. no itch or hurt. can sometimes go away with no treatemnt
what is latent stage syphilis
no symptoms. bacteria is burning into the tissues of the body. not infectious at this point, but if pregnant then it could infect the baby
what is late stage syphilis
major effects on the cardiovasular system from attacks on the body. neurosyphilis (insanity)
