How is leishmania transmitted?

By sandfly vectors.

What kind of parasites are leishmania?
A
Obligate intracellular parasites.
Live in cells of the macrophage lineage.

Where do people contract leishmaniasis?
A
In tropical areas and around the Mediterranean where sand flies live

What cures are available for leishmaniasis?
A
No good complete cure. Very hard to completely cure it. Most people even if they don’t have many symptoms will still be infected many years later

What does it mean that leishmania is a zoonotic disease?
A
Animals are a major reservoir for the parasite and it can be passed from animal to human e.g. dogs
