Lecture 5 Flashcards
What does bacillus anthracis cause?
Causative agent of anthrax by exposure to spores via animals or soil
What are characteristics of bacillus anthracis that make it pathogenic
Unique protein capsule, makes it resistant to phagocytosis
Aerobic growth conditions (O2)
Spores, which are very stable resistant to heat, drying, spores germinate and toxins are made.
What illness does bacillus cereus cause and how
2 types of enterotoxin
Causes food poisoning when spores enter food product and is, not capsulated and resistant to penicillin
Causes severe nausea, vomiting
2 types of enterotoxin:
Heat labile, longer less severe
Heat stable, shorter but mere severe
Clostridium gram positive bacteria
Anaerobic
Powerful exotoxins which results in rappel diagnosis
Clostridium botulinum
Causes rapidly fatal food poisoning from lethal neurotoxin
Causes double vision, muscle weakness/ paralysis, respiratory paralysis = death (becaus ACH is inhibited in auto nervous system)
Treatment: antitoxin and respiratory assistance
Cause: smoked fish or canned veggies
What kind of illness does clostridium gram positive anaerobic bacteria cause
Telenus, botulism, gas gangrene and colitis
What causes infant botulism
Honey with spores, spores germinate and bacteria colonies (grows) and neuro toxin is released which causes muscle weakness
What does clostridium tetani
Caused by break in skin (-rusty nail)
Extern is tetanospasmin
Causes lock jaw. And sustained contraction of skeletal muscle
Booster (tetanus shot)
Clostridium perfingens 2 classes of infection
1, wound infection/ cellulitis which is necrotic skin damage and has a spongy, moist and gas pockets in skin
2. Clostridia myonecrosis which is trauma to muscles and exotoxin release degrade muscles
Treatments: penicillin, oxygen and removing damaged tissue
Clostridium difficile
Causes antibiotic associated colitis from an overuse of antibiotics since it kills of regular Flora in the gut. Infects colon and releases exotoxins that cause diarrhea and cytotoxic to colon cells
What are the 2 non-spare forming rods
Listeria monocytogenes and corynebacterium diphtheriae
Causes and effets lysteria monocytogenes
Dairy products like unpasteurized milk (mik bacteria)
Causes general malaise, diarrhea, meningitis ,.. . septicamea and. still birth
Crosses 3 protective barriers (blood-brain,GI and mother to child)
Treatment: ampicillin
Immundcomprimised are at risk
Corynebacterium doptheriae
Causes diphtheria, colonization of pharynx and release of exotoxins into bloodstream
Exotoxins damages heart and neural cells
Treatment: antitoxins
Enterocolitis
Caused by s.enterica bacteria
Causes nausea, vomiting tummy issues
Fever, chills
Caused by ingestion of contaminated poultry, eggs, meat and milk
Don’t use antibiotics
Enteric fever
Caused by S. Enterica
Generalized infection, bacterial multiplication in lymphoid tissue
Necrosis of intestinal lymphoid tissue
Contaminated drinking water
Stomach problems
Salmonella enteritis
Salmonella tyhomurium
Enteric fever
Salmonella tyhi or salmonella paratyphi
Escherichia coli
.normal got Flora
Lactose fermenting
