LECTURE 5-1 Flashcards
Prokaryote
Unicellular organism
Bacterium
Unicellular microorganism with cell walls and nucleus in cytoplasm but lacks organelles
Archaea
Group of single called prokaryotic organisms and have no nucleus
Cyanobacteria
Phylum of bacteria that obtain their energy thru photosynthesis — the only PS prokaryotes able to produce oxygen
Methanogens
Methane producing bacterium — reduces carbon dioxide to methane
Ex: guts of cow
Halophiles
(Micro)organism that grows in/can tolerate saline conditions
Thermophiles
Bacterium/ microorganism that grows best at higher than normal temps
Photoautotroph
Organisms that can make their own energy using light and carbon dioxide via PS
EX: green plants, photosynthetic bacteria
Photoheterotroph
Organisms that use light for energy but cannot use carbon dioxide as sole carbon source
Ex: purple + green non sulphur bacteria
Chemoautotroph
Cells that create their own energy and biological materials from inorganic chemicals
Ex: bacteria
Chemoheterotroph
Cells that are not capable of fixing carbon to form own organic compounds
Ex: animals + fungi
Obligate anaeroby
Poisoned by oxygen so they gather at bottom of tube where oxygen concentration is the lowest
Facultative annaeroby
Grow with/without oxygen bc hey can metabolize energy energy aerobically/anaerobically
Obligate aeroby
Need oxygen because they cannot ferment or respire anaerobically — gather at top of tube where oxygen concentration is highest
Stromatolite
Calcareous mound built up of layers of ice secreting Cyanobacteria and trapped sediment — found in Precambrian rocks as earliest known fossils
