Lecture 4- vital substance Flashcards
vital life force, energy that flows throughout the body, maintaining overall health, the root of the human body
Qi
what is Qi functions
growth & development
warming: by readjusting Qi
Wei Qi from exterior attacks
nourishes Yin Qi and nutritive Qi
Qi Hua: functions of the organs
- rooted in the kidneys and transported through the body by San Jiao
-essential for growth, development and functioning of the body’s organ systems - greater Yuan Qi( true Qi)= greater Zang-fu (organ qi )
- needs to be nourished by food essence
-depletes as you age
Yuan Qi (genetic inheritance)
how is Yuan Qi depleted
excess activity/ lack of rest
prolonged illness
increased ejaculation
increased pregnancies
-transformation of food and nutrition into Qi
-food enters stomach first, “rotted and ripened” then transformed into Food Qi by SPLEEN, but not. yet a form usable for the body
- Food Qi rises to the lungs w/ air to form Zong Qi (gathering Qi)
- also goes to the heart to be transformed into blood
Food Qi ( Gu Qi)
direction of the Food Qi and blood
food Qi goes to spleen, then lungs, then heart which transforms to blood
direction of the Food Qi and gathering Qi
Food Qi goes to the spleen which goes to the lungs WITH the air and both transform into the gathering Qi
formed by the interaction of Food Qi and air
-function to the heart and lungs
- gathers in the throat and assists in speech
Zong Qi (gathering Qi)
direction of the Zong Qi (gathering Qi)
Food Qi to the spleen –> lungs–> heart–> blood
Zhen Qi AKA True Qi
- last stage of transformation of the Qi pathways
- derived from the Zong Qi (gathering Qi) that is then split into the nutritive Qi (ying Qi) and defensive Qi (Wei Qi) that is used for body survival
Nutritive Qi: interior
- derived from food extracted by the spleen and stomach
-refined Qi made from food, air and Yuan Qi (true Qi)
- nutritive function: nourishes internal organs with healthy link to blood flow in channels and BV
Ying Qi
Defensive Qi, to protect against pathogens such as the wind, heat, cold, dampness
- protects muscular surface, controls the opening of pores, moistens the skin & hair, adjusts body temp, warms up Zang-Fu organ Qi
Wei Qi
functions of the organs:
zang organs, yin organs, solid organs, fu organs, yang organs, hallow organs
Zang-Fu organ Qi
what type of Qi forms blood
mainly Food Qi ( Gu Qi)
Blood
Blood functions
- nourishment & moisture: limbs, hair, sinews, bones, bowel
- mental foundations
- circulation of Ying Qi
- menstruation
what is the connection between Qi as the commander and Blood as the nurturing mother?
Qi- commander that is vital dynamic energy that directs things in the body
- blood ice the nursing mother that provides the body with nutrients and substances
Qi = yang = active & energetic
Blood= Yin= nurturing substance
relationship b/w blood and organs, what does spleen and liver do
Blood created from Food Qi, which blood resides in the heart
- spleen: supports blood in place
- liver: stores blood
Body fluids
sweat, saliva, urine, tears, digestive juices, moistens skin, muscles, etc.
-JIN= THIN
- YE= THICK
circulates with DEFENSIVE QI (Wei Qi)
-controlled by lungs, warm and nourishes muscles
-clear & watery in nature
- found on mucus membranes & skin
-becomes portion of blood
JIN- thin fluids
What type of fluid circulates with NUTRITIVE QI
-controlled by spleen & kidney
- lubricates joint cavities, bone marrow CFS, vicious in nature
- found in bowels, brain , bones, viscera
YE- thick fluids
