Lecture 4 visual development Flashcards
What is fovea development like at birth when compared to an adult?
child:
ill-defined pit and inner retinal layers missing
shorter cone outer seg length
wider cone spacing
low density of cones
adult:
obvious pit and inner retinal layers moved aside
longer cone outer segment
cones more packed, less spacing
high density of cones
What age can infants start to make colour discriminations?
2 months if they are dichromatic
What is vernier acuity?
a positional acuity
a measure of the smallest offset between two objects
its processed in striate and extra-striate cortices
What is vision like at birth?
no colour perception
OKN eye movements present
VA and CS just measurable
What is vision like at 2 months?
colour vision but not yellow
VA and CS improves
response to motion other than OKN
What is vision like at 6 months?
has some stereovision
CSF similar to adult
