Lecture 4 - Neuroimaging II Flashcards
What does PET stand for?
positron emission tomography
Describe PET scanning.
Radio active tracer injected into patient.
Material distributed throughout tissue and then image where the radioactive material is found.
How does PET work?
As the radioactive substance decays, positrons are emitted.
Positron moves through the tissue until it meets an electron and are drawn together and undergo annihilation reaction to give out energy.
2 gamma photons exit from the human body where detectors detect their presence.
What does a hot colour represent in a PET?
Grey matter (high glucose metabolic rate)
What does a cool colour represent in a PET?
White matter (low glucose metabolic rate)
