What are the three main categories of hormone?

A

Steroid - lipid derived from cholesterol.

Peptide - made of short polypeptide chains. (most hormones are this variety). (Insulin is an example)

Amine - derived from aromatic amino acids. (An example is adrenaline).

What hormones belong to the amine group?

A

Thyroid hormones:
- Triiodothyronine (T3)
- Thyroxine (T4)

Adrenal medulla:
- Epinephrine

Pineal gland:
- Melatonin

The precursors to these hormones are the amino acids tyrosine and tryptophan.
