lecture 4 Flashcards
What are the Sedges that we deal with the most on the East Coast?
Yellow Nutsedge
Purple Nutsedge
Green Kylinga
Describe the leaves of Sedges
Triangular, smooth
Sedges are highly aggressive in what environments?
- Wet sites with immature turf
- seedbeds
What sedge has underground tubers?
Yellow nutsedge
What is the growth habit of Green Kylings?
Rhizometous
How does Kylinga reproduce?
Rhizomes and seed
How does Yellow nutsedge reproduce?
Tubers and Seed
When do NTS and Kylings germinate?
April and May
(Emergence occurs all summer)
Why is it difficult to control YNS and Kylinga with Pre-emergent herbicides?
- They continue to emerge from early spring through the summer. pre emergent control only lasts 6-8 weeks
Tenacity is safe to spray on all C3 grass seedbeads to control YNS/Kylings…..except _______grass.
Bentgrass
What is the safest herbicide choice to control YNS and Kylinga on bentgrass?
Sedgehammer
DIsmiss works well on warm season grasses…how is it on cool season turf?
- It’s a slower, longer process because the application rate is much lower in C3 grasses.
At what intervals do you want to spray for kylinga/YNS?
When do you start?
- 2 Applications on a 4 to 6 week interval
- Starting in late June, early July
What is an aggressive tactic when trying to control Bentgrass in areas with other C3 turf species. What are some cosiderations needed before applying it?
- • Mesotrione (Tenacity) Mixed With Triclopyr (Turflon Ester ) Is Highly Effective and Safe To Use On Most Cool-Season Grasses Including Tall Fescue, Fine-Leaf Fescues, Kentucky Bluegrass and Perennial Ryegrass
- Very Effective, only use if <20% bentgrass in stand.
- – Safety and Effectiveness Can Only Be Assured With High Pressure (30psi) Sprayers Equipped With Flat-Fan Nozzles
- – Mesotrione is too injurious when used with a hand pump sprayer
