What are the major symptoms of angina pectoris?
Discomfort and chest pain are the major symptoms of angina pectoris.
How can chest pain from angina feel?
Chest pain from angina can feel like fullness, burning, squeezing, or pressure - ‘an elephant sitting on my chest’.
What areas can pain from angina radiate to?
Pain from angina can radiate to the back, shoulder, jaw, neck, or arms.
What are other symptoms of angina?
Other symptoms of angina include sweating, nausea, dizziness, shortness of breath, and fatigue (extreme tiredness).
What is the first step in the dealing with an angina emergency during dental treatment?
Terminate dental treatment
What position should the patient be placed in during angina emergency treatment?
Place patient in upright or semi supine position
What does C-A-B stand for in the assessment during angina treatment?
C-A-B stands for Circulation, Airway, and Breathing
What should be checked under Circulation?
Check pulse, BP, and skin color
What should be ensured under Airway?
Ensure airway is clear and open
What should be checked under Breathing?
Check for normal respiratory rate, depth, and effort
What abnormal sounds should be listened for during breathing assessment during CAB?
Listen for abnormal sounds such as wheezing and stridor
What should be monitored during angina emergency treatment?
Monitor vitals
What medication should be administered for angina?
Administer Nitroglycerin
Nitroglycerin is available in 10.4 mg/tablet
• Use patient’s own medication if current
• Pt will feel tingling sensation on tongue with “fresh” medication
• Administer one tablet every 5 minutes up to 3 doses
• Typically alleviates symptoms within 2-4 minutes
Contraindications to use of nitroglycerin
Patient on Vasodilators
• ED meds
•ace inhibitors
•ccbs
•ARBS
Following emergency administration of nitroglycerin , patient may experience what symptoms
tachycardia, flushing, pounding in head, and hypotension
May resume treatment if patient feels well enough
If chest pain is not relieved after 2nd dose of nitroglycerin :
• Contact EMS
• EMS should be contacted immediately if patient states that symptoms are more severe than usual
• If chest pain occurs on a patient with no known anginal history:
• EMS should be contacted immediately
• Steps for treatment of a known anginal patient should be followed
