Describe the process of smallpox immunity from the cowpox vaccine

A

Cowpox and smallpox share some viral surface antigens → induction of antibodies against cowpox surface antigens → they bind and neutralize smallpox virus

A

passive
Preformed products protect immunosuppressed patients
IVIG containing IgG from vaccinated donors
No memory, not long lasting, dependent on antibody half life
Prevent disease following known exposure (tetanus and rabies) and block toxins

active
Humoral or cell mediated immunity
Memory via B or T cells, long lasting
