lecture 31 - vaccinations Flashcards
Describe the process of smallpox immunity from the cowpox vaccine
Cowpox and smallpox share some viral surface antigens → induction of antibodies against cowpox surface antigens → they bind and neutralize smallpox virus
Define a vaccine
Modified component of the pathogen to induce protective immune response specific to s pathogen
Define the difference between passive and active immunization
passive
Preformed products protect immunosuppressed patients
IVIG containing IgG from vaccinated donors
No memory, not long lasting, dependent on antibody half life
Prevent disease following known exposure (tetanus and rabies) and block toxins
active
Humoral or cell mediated immunity
Memory via B or T cells, long lasting
