LECTURE 31 - asthma & copd devices Flashcards

1
Q

Describe a metered-dose inhaler (MDI)

A
  • Pressurized device that delivers medication via aerosol
  • Generally, contains a propellant that pushes the medication into the lungs when activated
  • Often will instruct patients to take a slow and deep breath upon administration
  • Requires hand-breath coordination from the patient; does NOT require breath to activate the medicine, inability to coordinate well could result in a sub-therapeutic dose
  • Priming usually required prior to first use AND if not used over ‘x’ number of days
  • Often requires to be shaken prior to use
  • Could include a spacer

Q

Describe a dry powder inhaler

A
  • Breath-actuated device that delivers medication via powder
  • Generally, no propellant in the device
  • Often will instruct patients to take a fast & deep breath upon administration, too slow of a breath could result in a subtherapeutic dose
  • Breath is activating the medication; does NOT require hand-breath coordination
  • Priming NOT required
  • Shaking prior to use NOT required
