Lecture 3: Thermodynamics Flashcards
System & Surroundings
System: macroscopic body under study
Surroundings: everything rlse
Thermodynamics
The study of energy and its relationship to macroscopic properties of chemical systems
Open system
Exchanges mass and energy with its surroundings
Closed system
Exchanges energy with its surroundings, but not mass
Isolated system
Does not exchange energy or mass with its surroundings
Extensive properties
Proportional to the size of the system
Intensive properties
Independent of the size of the system
State functions
Pathway independent properties that describe the state of a system
Path functions
Pathway dependent properties that do not describe the state of the system
Heat
The natural transfer of energy from a warmer body to a cooler body
Work
Any energy transfer that is not heat
Conduction
Thermal energy transfer via molecular collisions; requires direct physical contact
