Lecture 3: Textures. Concepts and Terms: music, sound, space and time Flashcards
the functional relation of musical lines to one another; the number of musical strands or layers occurring simultaneously. In recording and editing, the creation of sound ______ is often called “layering”. Can also apply to sound _______ such as dialogue, foreground and background sound
texture
A single line of music, no accompaniment
- background is absent
- give a sound and music example
monophony
sound: single voice speaking, or many voices saying the same exact thing at the same time
music: singing happy birthday with our friends
a group sounding the same pitches together, including doubling the octave
unison
Texture consisting of more than one line, but each line moves with more or less the same rhythm
examples:
homophony
christmas carols, folk songs
sound example: dialogue between two people with indistinct background sound
most common texture in music. a tune is supported by its _______, making for a strong functional separation of foreground and background
- has a different rhythm than melody
- parallel to the overall sound design for film: dialogue in the foreground, music and ambient sound in the background.
accompaniment
two or more simultaneously sounding lines
-not as dramatic as other types of texture
-counterpoint: harmonious opposition of independent musical lines
give examples:
- no one sound has priority or is more important than the others.
polyphony
example: singing “are you sleeping” in a around
sound example: overlapping dialogue or multiple sound effects effects occurring at the same time.
accompaniment without melody
- diminishes the foreground/background distinction
-has only background
give examples
a-melodic texture
- sound effects only
- chords, strong rhythms, no melody (tune)
accompaniment texture that is repeated
-precedes the appearance of a melody (foreground music), then continues as the melody enters

several sequences gathered in a broad narrative grouping, using the same general criterion of unity of time and place as for a scene.
film wont have more than three or four ____.
Act
A series of scenes related as a narrative unit. short for ____ of shots and can refer to any series of shots that are related by some criteria that is important to the person doing the analysis.
sequence
a number of shots gathered together in terms of unity of time and space.
can vary in length
typically last from 1-5mins
Scene
a single strip of film, the basic unit of continuity editing; can vary greatly, from 1 to 100 sec (or more)
shot
a clearly defined musical idea (usually made up of two phrases) which sounds complete- it has a proper closed ending. can be called a musical sentence
Theme
more or less aligned with short-term memory. typically medium length segments, comprised of motives. incomplete grammatical unit.
