Lecture #3 Slides - Metabolism Flashcards
what is a calorie?
the energy required to produce ATP
how many calories is a kilocalorie (kcal)?
1000 calories = 1 kcal
Food labels and most popular diet discussions are for ____ kcal per day. What is the problem with this?
2000 - problem is not everyone is the same, so the 2000kcal diet would not work for everyone.
What is direct calorimetry?
you put food inside a closed vessel, and heat it up until it is fully gone, and the measure the amount of energy that was used - then you can tell how many calories was in it - you can also tell how many proteins or carbohydrates ect. were in it and how much contributed to calories
what are the Cal/g (energy) for carbohydrates, lipids and proteins?
CHO & Protein = 4.2cal/g
Lipid = 9.4 Cal/g
“minimal amount of energy needed to maintain basic physiological functions”
basal metabolic rate (BMR)
“energy required to maintain basic physiological functions in a relaxed, awake and reclined state”
resting metabolic rate (RMR)
metabolic rate varies with what four variables?
age, gender, body size, body composition
Starting at age __ you have a reduction in MR that continues into early adulthood
25
what is TEF?
thermic effect of food -takes energy to digest and absorb food - like a tax, there is a cost
formula for total daily energy expenditure?
RMR + TEF + PA
how do you calculate RMR?
multiply body weight in pounds (2.2lbs=1kg) by 10 for females or 11 for males (correct for target weight!!!!)
How do you calculate TEF?
its 10% of RMR
