What things do you want to go over in the history if you suspect a head and neck problem?

A

Symptoms - sore throat, dysphnia (hoarseness), dysphagia, odynophagia, mouth/throat ulcer, neck lump
Smoking/alcohol
FH - thyroid problems

Where would you want to examine?

A
Neck 
Oral cavity - start at lips (can get cancer of lips), ventral (under) surface of tongue, ulcers of gums, tongue, cheeks
Hard and soft palate
Pharnyx 
Larynx
Ear/nose/salivary glands
Checking for cleft palates

How can you examine the throat?

A

Stack - TV on top of endoscope, can have a good, uncles look at the tongue, epiglottis and vocal chords
Fibre optic nasolaryngoscopy - should be able to see pearly white vocal chords (normal vocal chords)
