lecture 3; guest lecturer (sex worker) Flashcards
what she said about good parts of being sex worker not welfare
welfare, she felt inferior, but as a sex worker she felt independent and proud
clubs
there’s a bar, you make about 90 euro/hour plus 90 per bottle of champagne, nightlife. harder to say no
private house
women wait for clients in the living room, always daytime, clients who come there don’t want to see each other, 80 euro for half hour. harder to say no
window work
girls at the window make more bc you don’t have to do as much, but more scary. she said she got emotionally hardened by all the ppl laughing, but it’s very independent- you choose, by who you look at and just whether you want to
street work
without a license, you need to just find a place- in the woods, random empy hosue, etc. Very dangerous, many stories of rape and violence. One story- two clients two women, raped at gunpoint, one escaped and called the police, who said they couldnt come- went to police after who said it wasnt a crime bc they went voluntarily.
misunderstanding: NOT just drug addicts, also trans women (club/private houses don’t take them) more risk for violence, housewife (can’t be in the window all day).
how happy are you with your job?
most say happy or very happy; its similar to other jobs. But for women on streets where its very violent, they say if i wasn’t addicted i wouldnt be doing this.
difficulty w getting a license
depending on the city, but very hard to get one. Argument they use is that it’s possible that its human trafficking. Only for one city, so you can’t move. If no license and you’re caught, then police raid and you often lose your rent/mortgage, so you become homeless. So, workers who have clients in their house, they don’t report the vioelnce/rape because they don’t want to become homeless.
societys view of whores
-lowest of the low, justified violence. Sex workers live with a secret. Much camaraderie between sex workers.
what sex workers need
rights and respect. They’re not on welfare, theyre earning their own money. Make it a legal profession
proud vs step up
step up christian, they see themselves as better and want to “save” them. proud provides lawyers, more productive help.
male sex workers
MORE risk for violence- no clubs for them, often work alone and have to hide, even bigger stigma
