Lecture 3 Buses Flashcards
A bus is a shared transmission medium?
All devices listen to bus.
What is the single bus?
Many devices connected to bus reduces system performance.
What does expansion bus connect?
Peripherals.
What does Syystem bus connect?
Main memory, expansion bus, cache.
What does local bus connect?
Processor, local io controller, cache.
What are multiplexed buses?
When bus lines are used for multiple purposes.
What does PCI bus stand for?
Peripheral component interconnect.
How does PCI bus work?
Bus is connected to processor via north bridge. The expansion bus bridge connects PCI bus with expansion bus.
7 features of PCI bus?
32 or 64 bit. 32bit at 33Mhz = 133Mbps 64bit at 66Mhz = 528Mbps 49 mandatory, 51 optional Meets io requirements Supports other buses Supports single and multicore
What interfaces between computer and peripherals?
i/o modules.
What are the three types of i/o techniques.
Programmed i/o.
Interrupt-driven i/o.
Direct memory access.
Bus lines are divide into what three groups?
Control lines, address lines, data lines.
