Lecture 3 Flashcards
Types of visualization tools
Specific
General
Specific visualization tool definition
A specific visualization tool is a visualization tool that is defined for a well defined context where user has very little control
General visualization tool
It is a flexible tool that users have several choices to make and can handle different kinds of data.
Ineffective choices of the user can lead to a poor design.
Task absraction
We are moving from the domain to the task, we are trying to know how the user view the tasks.
Does he want to compare ?
Does he want to contrast?
In other words goal
If a user want to identify good movies
Domain will be general population, movie enthusiasts
Data and task abstraction will be:
Task:
find high scoring movie
Data:
combine audience and critic ratings

true
Three levels of actions for which visualization tool can be used
*High-level action (analyze)
*Middle-level action : search (lookup, locate , browse , explore)
Low level actions: query (استعلام)
Identify one target (min, max, distribution..)
Compare some targets
summarize all targets ( dependencies, correlations,…. )
The highest level of action is analyze
Analyze is made up from consume and produce.
Analyze consume is made up from:
Discover
Present
Enjoy
discover new information, analyze information to further understand, simply enjoy visualizing data of interest
Analyze produce is made up from
Annotate , Record , Derive.
Consisting of generating new information rather than consuming existing material
In the search if we have a location and target known then we are looking up in search
true (lookup for a word in a dictionary)
In the search if we have location known and target unknown then we are browsing
true ( items on shelves)
In the search if we have location unknown and target known) then we are locating
true ( find out where a specific target is )
keys in your house for example
in the search if we have location unknown and target unknown then we are exploring
true ,
search for characteristics without considering a certain location .
Exploring a nice picnic spot in the city
In the query identify
Identify a single target
Typically identify characteristics of one or several targets given by look up or locate
In the query compare
compare multiple targets, usually more complex than identify
In the query summarize
Provide a comprehensive view
Targets represent aspects of data that is of interest to the user
Example Trends(increase, decrease) Outliers Distribution Min and Max Correlation Dependency similarity Network Data
