Lecture 3 Flashcards
What is metal forming?
deforms and reshapes metal under applied forces
advantages of metal forming
can be fast
and can improve material properties
disadvantages of metal forming
high forces required and only suitable for large scale production
what is flow stress
force required to cause material to flow
what is working
plastically deforminga material to enhance its shape or properties
what is hot working
working under conditions where re-crystallisation happens with deformation
what is cold working
work hardening occurs
- carried out at room temp
- faults in crystal lattice move and make deformation diffucult as now non-uniform shape
what is warm working
reduction in flow stress but no recrystalisation
advantages of hot working
- lower flow stress
- improved ductility
- large amounts of deformation possible
disadvtanges of hot working
- heating cost
- poor tolerances
advantages of cold working
- good surface finish and tolerances
- no heating required
disadvantages of cold working
- more force required
- used for limited amount of deformation
what is rolling
- squeezing of metal between two rolls
- breaks down coarse, brittle and porous grains
- recrystallises with smaller uniform grains
different rolling types
- two high
- three high
- four high
- tandem rolling
what is shaped section rolling
i beams rolled this way
- roling of H section parts
