Lecture 3 & 5 - Horizon + Crime and Society Flashcards
What is a horizon scan? What is its importance in shaping future long-term government policy and strategy?
Horizon scan is a framework to prepare for the future. It is an exploratory methodology to give insight and vision which involves assessing potential opportunities, uncertainties, and threats.
This is important as the future is uncertain; applying guesswork to predict the future based on what we know now. Decision-makers need to acquire relevant information in the current knowledge base (present) to make crucial strategic decisions for the future.
Explain the background of the Sigma-Delta Scan database resource.
The Sigma-Delta Scan is an example of how technology can be used to help organizations to identify and assess emerging risks and opportunities. By providing access to a wealth of information, the Sigma-Delta Scan can help organizations to make better-informed decisions about their future course of action.
Work through the adopted hierarchical framework to perform a horizon scan.
Source/Gap Scanning -> Evidence Scanning -> Analysis -> Issue Paper Draft -> Peer review -> Strategic review
Describe the main sections which makeup an Issue paper
Theres the headline, keywords, marker, genre, summary, implication, early indicators, drives & inhibitors, parallels and precedents and sources.
What is the importance in assessing information sources in terms of both their Evidential Value and Stimulus Value?
Evidential Value is the degree to which evidence and arguments support the claims made in a source.
Stimulus Value is the degree to which the source generates interest or excitement in the topic.
It is important to assess information sources in terms of both of these values in order to make informed decisions about what to read and believe.
How do you define opportunity? And how is this relevant is SCP for technology?
Opportunity - the situation and circumstance that make a crime more likely to occur.
Opportunity is a key factor in crime prevention. Opportunities can be created, modified, or removed to reduce crime. Technology can play a role in both creating and reducing opportunities for crime.
What is a problem-solving script clash?
A situation in which the goals of offenders and the goals of crime prevention professionals conflict.
Problem-solving script clashes are a recurring feature in the security arms race. Understanding and anticipating problem-solving script clashes is essential for effective crime prevention.
What is thinking, thief? And how does this relate to SCP?
This is a mindset that encourage designers to think from the perspective of both offenders and potential victims. This is a valuable approach for designing crime-resistant products and environments. It helps designers to identify and address the vulnerabilities that offenders exploit.
What is DAC’s approach?
DAC, otherwise known as Design Against Crime, is an approach to crime prevention that uses design principles and methods to reduce crime. It considers both the physical and social aspects of crime.
State the security function framework.
It is a tool for designing products and environments that are more resistant to crime. The security function framework helps designers to identify and address the specific crime problems they are trying to solve, a structured approach to evaluating the effectiveness of existing security measures.
What is the concept of a secure chair?
A chair that has been designed to reduce the risk of bag theft in bars and restaurants. It has a twin-notch feature cut in the leading edge of the seat. The bag handle is placed over the notch, and the bag is then anchored by its handle being enclosed between the seat and the back of the user’s knees.
